The art editor is the sole person in charge of the art team which makes decides what photos will be used and how the magazine will look, its very important that the cover page is as eye catching as it can possibly be, because the inside could be beautiful but they wont know that unless the front page looks the same.
Images sources
Magazines source their photos from either picture libraries or Freelancers. Photo libraries are used for getting pictures that will almost impossible to take at the time. This requires buying the rights to use them however. Although the company may have in-house photographers, people tend to choose Freelancers instead. Freelancers are just photographers that are their own boss, and the bigger magazine companies can hire them to take a photo for them. Its required that the photo be as professional as possible because it is important that the images can quickly tell you what the article is about and allow the reader to identify what and who are in it. The biggest photo agency is Corbis, with over 100 million photos available to buy.
